Chairman Eisner Accepts Award
LOS ANGELES -- Walt Disney Co. chairman and chief executive Michael
Eisner was lauded for his executive and creative abilities, just days
after two Disney board members called on him to resign.
Eisner received the Pioneer of the Year award presented by the Will
Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation on Thursday night.
"I think he is one of the authentic giants of our industry, based on
his track record," said Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture
Association of America.
The award came after board vice chairman Roy Disney resigned on Sunday
after learning he would not be renominated for another term because
he was over the board's retirement age. He blasted Eisner in a scathing
letter, saying the Disney chief had lost his way and presided over seven
years of decline.
On Monday, longtime Roy Disney ally Stanley Gold also resigned and echoed
calls for Eisner to step down.
Eisner has served as chairman and chief executive officer at Disney
since 1984.
The evening was expected to raise $1 million for the Motion Picture
Pioneers Assistance Fund, which provides financial assistance to film
industry veterans in need of help.
